Shaun’s Driving Force in Wansbeck
A unique and interesting new business has chosen Wansbeck as its base. Custom Golf Cars owner Shaun Wynne settled on Wansbeck after being shown units at West Sleekburn Industrial Estate, Bedlington by designated Commercial Premises Co-ordinator, Luke Dunnett of Go Wansbeck. “Shaun had been operating from his home in Blyth but demand for his services meant that he would need suitable premises and quick. I was able to identify Sleekburn as a potential location having the space needed and at an affordable cost” explains Luke, “His business is doing very well and I’m sure it will continue to do so.”
Custom Golf Cars began life when Shaun, who has 18 years of experience in the Golf Car industry, decided to go into business for himself. “Custom Golf Cars officially opened for business in September 2009. Currently operating on a one man basis – me! I offer new pre-
hospitals, race circuits, zoo’s, theme parks, car supermarkets, stately homes, universities – anyone really, there are just so many applications to list” explains Shaun.
“At any given time I have a large selection of pre-owned and ex-lease vehicles available but it isn’t all about the sales side of it. I offer parts and accessories and can service golf and utility vehicles. A large part of my business involves the refurbishment and restoration of golf cars. It could simply be to change the colour of your golf car but if you want to add a bit of ‘bling’ to it I can add alloy wheels or ‘jack it up’ to give it the ‘off road’ look. Basically we can customise it to suit your individuality.”
You might think that this is a very specialised service and of course you would be right but you might be pleasantly surprised by how in demand Shaun’s services are, especially locally. “Of course my work is very seasonal but business is going extremely well. I’m getting a feel for what people want and am growing in confidence.”
“We have recently launched another service for customers and are the importers and distributors of Batt Recon battery desulfators and currently have 2 service agents in Bournemouth and Nottingham with more in the pipeline. This product involves having batteries reconditioned instead of simply replacing them is not only beneficial to the environment but can also save customers a lot of money, potentially thousands of pounds for fleet users and owners,” said Shaun.
Ever complimentary of Go Wansbeck and the district itself as an emerging place to do business, Shaun has also been working with business coach Billy Webber who has helped Shaun to clearly identify his target market “The help from Go Wansbeck has been fantastic. Everything has gone according to plan and should continue to do so, so thanks to all those who have helped along the way.”
Shaun is also very excited about his latest project. “I’ve recently become an authorised dealer for Tomberlin who manufacture the only road legal golf car in the UK. It’s a great little car that ticks all the environmental boxes. It gives out no emissions or fumes, has no road tax, has a low insurance group, is low maintenance and best of all costs less than 2p per mile to run. There has already been a lot of interest in the Tomberlin and I am hoping to capitalise on that.”
